Many visitors to the island are content spending their holidays on the beaches, while getting a tan and cooling off in the turquoise waters.

Chaweng BeachSituated on the island’s east coast, Chaweng Beach is the longest and most beautiful, with plenty of accommodations for guests. It has six kilometers long coastline and the waters are clear and suitable for windsurfing, parasailing, snorkeling, and other water sports. Chaweng Beach Road has many resorts, bars and restaurants are situated. It is also here where the shopping, entertainment and nightlife districts are located on Koh Samui.

Just south of Chaweng Beach are the playful waters of Lamai Beach, virtually a surfers’ paradise, while Hin Ta Hin Yai’s unusual rock formations are Saui’s most photographed features. For those who want to get away form it all, there are Maenam, Bophut, BangRak and other beaches on the north coast, as well as beaches on the south and the west, including the renowned Taling Ngam. Lamai is Samui’s second largest beach. The waters are calmer and the coast is marked by granite boulders the jut out to the sea. This is an excellent spot for fishing.

Maenam is best for those seeking solitude, since it is smaller and not visited often by tourists, while Bophut offers the best sunset view on the island. Big Buddha is the northern coast facing Koh Phangan is quite secluded, making it the perfect hideaway, Maenam is considered Samui’s last predominantly backpacker beach with many cheap fan bungalows that are dotted along the beach.

The quieter and lesser known Choengmon is located in a very secluded part of the island, up on the northeast corner of the island, among a series of small bays, most of which have been given over to private residential developments. Officially Bangrak Beach, it named after the 12 meters high Buddha statue that dominates the area. The beach resorts here are much calmer and quieter than in Chaweng and Lamai on Samui’s east coast. It’s a lengthy, sweeping beach lined with resorts and restaurants, and although fairly laid back, those looking for girts and nightlife will have plenty to choose from. This is another quieter and more laid back feel beach and is popular with people who don’t want to be in the thick of Samui’s hedonistic areas. Bophut itself is also known as Fisherman’s village and is considered the most traditional and well preserved place on the island.

Bangrak BeachWithin a short stroll along the soft golden sandy beach on Bangrak Beach, small piers provide ferries and speedboats to the island of Koh Tao, well-known for its diving, snorkeling and wildlife or to take a room in Koh Phangan hotels where the famous Full Moon Party is held on Haad Rin beach. |
